Sean Paul Opens Up About Who Influenced His Stage Name
Jamaican rapper Sean Paul is giving his fans just a tad of history behind his stage name that he took from the famous athlete.
Appearing in the Vice Documentary episode “The Story of Sean Paul’s ‘Get Busy’,” the 49-year-old born Sean Paul Ryan Francis Henriques OD explained why he took the inspiration for the moniker from Guyanese cricket player Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
"There's a famous cricketer in Trinidad [named] Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Everybody was like, 'Sean da Paul,' and that name stuck," he explained during a Vice documentary.

Adding, “Then I just started to say it in shows and met the dude Chanderpaul years later, and he's like, 'Yo!' But yeah, big up to Shivnarine Chanderpaul.”
Paul also gave a shoutout to his stage name, in a Twitter post on Dec. 16.
"If u didnt kno ~ now you kno: big up #Chanderpaul,” he wrote in a tweet alongside a clip from the Vice documentary.
In other Sean Paul news, he became the first dancehall artist to perform at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City last month.
