Oprah Winfrey to Make Broadway Debut in Night, Mother
Oprah Winfrey just celebrated her 60th birthday, but the media mogul shows no signs of slowing down. The network boss and actress, who returned to the big screen in Lee Daniels' The Butler last year, is getting ready to make her Broadway debut in Night, Mother.
Winfrey will star opposite Tony winner Audra McDonald in the revival of Marsha Norman's 1983 play, and will play the starring role of a mother desperate to prevent her daughter from committing suicide. "Oprah has had a longstanding desire to act on Broadway," the lead producer of the project, Scott Sanders, told The New York Times. "She understands how unique and challenging performing live on stage will be as an actress."
The powerhouse set her sights on Broadway just last year, telling the New York Daily News, "Broadway is definitely in my future." She's also currently working with Sanders on a Broadway revival of the musical The Color Purple, which is also scheduled for 2015.
