Cam Newton Says He’s Not Done Having Kids
Cam Newton isn’t done building his legacy—on or off the field. The retired NFL star and father of eight recently shared that he’s open to expanding his family even further.
Speaking with PEOPLE ahead of Super Bowl LIX, the 35-year-old clarified that fatherhood is his greatest calling. “Did I tell you I want more?” he said when asked about his children. While he’s unsure of the exact number, he’s leaving it up to fate. “I don’t know, wherever much that God gives me,” he added.
The former athlete—who shares children with ex-girlfriend Kia Proctor, photographer LaReina Shaw, and current girlfriend Jasmin Brown—says his kids are his greatest source of purpose.
“They really give me my purpose, and there’s so many different things that I look at to say, they’re my refuge. They’re my peace. They’re my encouragement,” he explained.
"There’s times where, even I’m here and they’re still at home. Those type of things affect me, but it also gives me more reason to say I’m doing this because of that situation," he continued.
But for all the joy his children bring, Newton is also grappling with the consequences of past mistakes. During a recent episode of “Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test”, he reflected on how having a child outside of his long-term relationship strained his bond with his eldest daughter.
“My dark side in my life was like I was in a long-term relationship and I had a child outside my relationship,” he admitted. “We had just moved into a house, and everything was kind of perfect from the outside in, you know?”
His daughter, he said, struggled to understand. “All she kept asking was, ‘Yo, why?’”
Newton acknowledged that repairing the damage is an ongoing process. “I made my mistakes. Still making mistakes,” he said in a confessional. “I just want my children to know that their dad cares.”
As he looks ahead, the star says he is focused on strengthening his bond with his children—while also leaving the door open for more.
