Pop Smoke’s Funeral Procession Brings Brooklyn Together

Thousands gathered in the streets to send the 20-year-old MC off.

On Thursday (March 5), Brooklynites gathered in honor of fallen rap angel Pop Smoke’s memory during a celebration of his life held in his hometown: Brooklyn’s Canarsie neighborhood.

  • The streets were overtaken by those who loved and cherished the slain 20-year-old MC. This comes two weeks after Pop (born Bashar Barakah Jackson) was tragically murdered in a home invasion on February 19. He was laid to rest in his hometown yesterday, and Brooklyn came out in full force to send him off.

Beginning their march on 82nd Street and Flatlands, his family, friends and loved ones were joined by thousands of others who gathered in the streets for his final ride through the city, Complex reports.
A horse-drawn chariot escorted Pop’s casket to his final resting place. The publication further reported that “POP SMOKE” was engraved on the glass walls in the signature style of Off-White designer, Virgil Abloh. According to Complex, fans belted along to the lyrics of his hit singles “Welcome to the Party,” “Dior,” and “Shake the Room,” which blasted from the speakers of cars. Reportedly, one man even popped a bottle of champagne when “Element” played.

  • 50 Cent also took to Twitter where he commemorated Pop and vowed to finish the late rapper’s last album. Previously, Fifty revealed that he’d handle executive producing the rising Brooklyn rap star’s album, and hopes to release the project in May. Compton rapper Roddy Ricch has already said he’s onboard to contribute to the project.

“R.I.P Pop Smoke. He told his mom he wanted to take her to a award show. So I'm gonna make sure his album gets her there,” Fifty wrote along with a TMZ-shot video of the procession.
