Buju Banton to Serve 10-Year Sentence in Texas Prison
Buju Banton, the dancehall star who was sentenced for drug conspiracy in 2009, has been transferred to a Texas prison, where he will serve out the remainder of his 10-year sentence.
Banton would have carried out his sentence in Florida, where the crime was committed, but the Bureau of Prisons arranged a transfer due to a shortage of beds. Another prison in Mississippi was considered, but then nixed after it was determined that one of Banton's co-defendants would serve his sentence there.
The reggae singer was convicted in February of possession with intent to distribute over five kilograms of cocaine. He was caught on video sampling the drugs with an informant in a DEA-controlled warehouse in Miami.
Banton is currently at the Limestock County Correctional Institution in Groesbeck, Texas, where he is expected to remain until his sentence is completed in 2019.
