Jesse Williams recently sparked major outrage across social media when he posted photos of Mamie Till mourning her son Emmett Till in the likeness of the now widely popular "sacrifice everything" Nike memes.

After being dragged for creating the tone-deaf images as a means of promotion for his upcoming movie about the slain teen's life, the actor has returned to Twitter to explain himself and apologize for his approach.

According to the Grey's Anatomy star, he was only trying to highlight the sacrifices Till's mother had to make in the aftermath of her son's untimely and unjust death, with one of those being having an open casket funeral.

"I would absolutely never make light of the tremendous tragedy that foisted Mamie Till Mobley into her life of activism and could never pretend her being brutally tortured and executed was her 'sacrifice,'" he wrote. "The images were designed to highlight the tremendous sacrifices Mamie made by sharing her unrelenting journey for justice."

Ending his statement, he acknowledged that his approach at explaining his intentions through the images fell flat and serves as a learning experience.

"While I stand for creative expression, every swing ain't gonna be a home run," he said. "(And ya'll know I swing a lot.) Those who are sincere in this work and concern, I thank you."

The TiLL film will serve as Williams' directorial debut and will be co-produced by Whoopi Goldberg, who will also star in the project.
