This Day in Black History: April 13, 1997

Legendary golfer Tiger Woods wins the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Georgia.

Eldrick “Tiger” Woods made history by winning the 61st Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, Georgia. Woods was the first person of mixed African-American descent to win the title, as well as the youngest at age 21. He would go on to win the Masters three more times in 2001, 2002 and 2005. To date, he has won 14 major golf championships and 71 PGA Tour titles. In 2009, the focus shifted from his impeccable golf game and onto a sex scandal that ultimately ended his marriage to Swedish model Elin Nordegren in 2010. In recent years, the golfer has struggled to make a comeback.

Also, on this day in 1964, Sidney Poitier won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as construction worker Homer Smith in Lilies of the Field. Poitier was the first African-American male actor to win the award.
