Samuel L. Jackson’s Unamusement After Losing Tony Award Turns Into Meme

It looks like his best performance was actually in the audience.

No look goes unnoticed.

At last night’s 76th annual Tony Awards, Samuel L. Jackson seemed to make an unexpected performance that has the whole internet talking.

The notable actor and producer was up for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play” for his role in August Wilson’s first revival of The Piano Lesson on Broadway, directed by his wife LaTanya Richardson Jackson.

The category was full of talent, with Jackson up against actors David Zayas, Arian Moayed, Brian Uranowitz and Jordan Cooper. The award ultimately went to Uranowitz for his performance as Ludwig and Nathan in Tom Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt.

During the announcement of Uranowitz as the winner, Jackson’s eye roll of unamusement paired with dry applause quickly turned into an internet meme.

“Samuel L. Jackson’s face took me all the way out” wrote another Twitter user. “He looks like he knew he wasn’t getting the Tony.”

Despite his loss, it seems as though Jackson delivered a different ‘best performance’, with his losing reaction.
