R. Kelly's Attorney Claims The Singer Didn't Know Aaliyah Was 15 When He Married Her
R. Kelly’s legal team is trying to do damage control after Lifetime aired their six-part series “Surviving R. Kelly.”
Critics and former fans are outraged over the stories they heard in the documentary, so Steven Greenberg, the singer’s attorney, did an interview with Good Morning America.
During the back-and-forth, Greenberg denied just about everything regarding his client. “The man was not operating a harem, or a sex cult, or holding people hostage or anything like that,” he said. “People shouldn’t be able to do this to someone.”
On the topic of Aaliyah, he tried to sway the topic to other celebrities who have been known to marry underage girls. “He was married to her when she was 15. Elvis was married to Priscilla,” Greenberg said. “My understanding is that she did not claim to be 15,” he continued. “And, in order to get married, she had to lie about her age.” He also claimed Kelly had “no idea” she was underage when they got married.
Since the airing of “Surviving R. Kelly” a formal investigation has been launched by law enforcement in Illinois and Georgia. R. Kelly has consistently denied any allegations of abuse or sexual assault.
