Marsai Martin Talks Former Disney Show ‘Saturdays’ Being ‘Overshadowed’
Marsai Martin wanted more for “Saturdays,” the former Disney Channel sitcom that she executive produced.
The actress-producer, 20, was the latest guest on the podcast “Baby, This Is Keke Palmer,” around the 24-minute mark of the video below, she reflected on “Saturdays.” The show, which followed a Black all-female teenage skate crew, ran for one season and 15 episodes before being canceled in 2023. Last year, it won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series.
“There is always something about just putting our Black girls in the forefront, and that's exactly what we did with ‘Saturdays,’” Martin told Keke Palmer. “And it was so fun and it was so dope while it lasted.”
The “Black-ish” star noted the show was tossed to the “wayside” due to marketing issues. Palmer dissected the current streaming model, oversaturating shows and “Saturdays,” which are not understood by executives unfamiliar with the premise of Black girlhood in Chicago.
“It's funny ‘cause they'll hype it up too like, ‘Oh, yo, this is my favorite show,” Martin said about the response from Disney.
Martin said why the show was canceled, “Girl, only God knows.” “I think it’s because they never really know how to promote Black television or films.”
Martin also described the network as wanting her to support "Saturdays" "fully." “It just kind of got overshadowed with a bunch of other projects in the lineup,” she continued.
But while it wasn’t “an issue” for Martin to move on from the project, she admitted to feeling bad for the show’s three lead stars, Danielle Jalade, Daria Johns, and Peyton Z. Basnight.
“I’m like, ‘OK, it is what it is,’” Martin emotionally explained. “We know what happened. But, you know, I think that for our Black girls, our three main leads, for this show to be their breakthrough, in a sense, for being seen… I can never talk about it without getting emotional.
Also starring Omar Gooding and Golden Brooks, formerly of “Smart Guy” and “Girlfriends,” respectively, Martin co-produced “Saturdays” alongside her parents Joshua and Carol Martin, Norman Vance Jr. and Nicole Dow.
