Wolfacejoeyy Says It’s His Time To Shine

The popular Staten Island artist is gearing up for the release of his new album “Valentino.”

Wolfacejoeyy is an artist who defies all labels. A native of Staten Island, the eclectic rapper/singer/producer combines elements of sexy drill, trap, Jersey Club, and more for his unique sound for his ever-grown fanbase. His smooth rhymes and catchy melodic hooks have propelled him to carve out his own space on the music landscape.

After releasing several singles and projects, Joeyy caught the attention of the nation in 2023 with his viral single “Buku,” which amassed almost four million streams on Spotify.

In March, he gave his first-ever festival performance at Rolling Loud California to rave reviews. If that’s not enough, Joeyy is also a senior at the College of Staten Island majoring in design and digital media.

Staten Island is known for producing legendary hip-hop artists The Force MDs, Shyheim, and the Wu-Tang Clan. Joeyy spoke about how being from the “forgotten borough” shaped his style.

“Since a lot of people don't like to claim Staten Island to be part of New York, I feel like that puts a real chip on my shoulder. I really try my best to separate myself and every single way that I possibly can,” Joeyy explained to BET.com. “Growing up there, you're always around a bunch of people you know because Staten Island is pretty small. It's like, everybody's reachable.”

At an early age, Joeyy’s mother noticed that he had a musical talent and encouraged him to hone his skills. When his family relocated to Nigeria, he was inspired by artists of Afrobeats superstars such as Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido.

“My mom would always tell me that when I was younger I used to just play the piano. I knew I  loved music and I’ve always been an avid listener of music," Joeyy said. "But I never thought I would do it until I moved back from Nigeria after living there for five years.”

While he enjoyed his time living in Africa, Joeyy says he had no idea he was going to live there.

“It was funny how it happened. I initially thought we were going for the holidays and we would come back in a few weeks. After a couple of months passed, my mom took me to a new school and I stayed with my cousins,” Joeyy remembered. “But my experience there was pretty fun. I got to be around my extended family and was in boarding school as well so I really learned how to be on my own and to take care of myself.”

Returning to the States, Joeyy was committed to learning all he could about making music.

“That's when I started to be curious about how people made music. When I started going to a new school, I started working on making beats because I didn't have a lot of friends and it was something I could do by myself. I would make beats every day after school.” Joeyy said.

“After a couple of years, I wanted to do something else. SoFaygo told me I should try to record my own music,” he continued. “I got a Snowball USB mic and the rest is history. I fell in love with recording the same way I fell in love with it when making beats.”

One of Joeyy’s frequent collaborators is #WhereIs22, more famously known as Michael Rainey Jr., star of the hit drama Power Book II: Ghost and fellow Staten Island native. The two connected over their love of music and began working on projects.

“Me and Michael linked up through mutual friends. There were a lot of people who knew him, and they would always be like, ‘Yo, like, you gotta make beats with 22,” he said. “I just knew he was an actor, but I didn't know he made beats. He just hit me one day, and he was like, “Send me some melodies.” We started making beats together, and we did that for a while. In early 2021, he hit me one day and said, “Why don't we have no songs together?” I was like that's a good question. So we started working from there."

Joeyy and Rainey worked together on the collaborative project 22Joeyy, released in September 2023. He considers it one of his finest accomplishments in his young career.

“I always describe the album as a time. I had just dropped “Buku” and a whole bunch of other songs that were going crazy. Me and Michael have always talked about making a project. He had just finished filming and I was like, “We have to do this project.” He was down to make it happen,” Joeyy said. “For a whole month, we would go to the studio maybe every week or every other week," Joeyy said.

"We just cranked out a bunch of songs. He would send me beats and I would record some at home or in the studio. Then we would make beats together," he continued. "I’m glad people love that project and it was pretty well received. I’m happy that it turned out the way it did.”

Recently, Joeyy released his new song, “I Know,” produced by #WhereIs22. The song is a sexy drill track in which Joey convinces his love interest to continue swooning over him.

“I recorded that song in October and I’ve been waiting to drop it because I think the whole sexy drill movement that's going on right now is really cool. People consider me a part of it. I just like to make stuff. Now that my album is about to drop. I thought we should give it to the fans,” Joeyy said.

“The first time I sent the song to Michael, he said, “Yo, I want to direct this or at least co-direct it.  Normally, I'm involved with all my videos. I try to come up with ideas and concepts. But he was just like, ‘Nah, I need to direct this video,” he recalled.  “So I was like, You know what, man? Go ahead. So he came up with the whole thing, and my director Tyco, who I worked with, was the main videographer and co-directed it.”

In 2024, Joeyy plans to keep evolving as an artist while making music without boundaries. He shared his excitement that he has a new album and is poised to have another breakout year.

“I’m about to drop an album called Valentino. All the songs we released like “WYA,” “Cake,” “Don't Be Dishonest,” and another one we’re dropping in a few weeks have been building up to that project,” he said. “It's an idea I've had for a long time and I've always wanted to execute that sh*t. I'm glad I finally did.”
