Let’s face it, in this current time, women are still given the short end of the stick. It’s sad, but it’s true. Women are still being paid much less than their male counterparts. Women are still bombarded with less than flattering labels and unwarranted derogatory comments. And most importantly, women are still victims of domestic and sexual violence.

While a single woman cannot fight these issues alone, one woman can join forces with others to take a stand for the rights of women. Looking to do just that, Amber Rose traded in her stilettos, laced up her boots and began The Amber Rose SlutWalk with nothing but a vision, her own money, public contributions and a few coins from her celebrity friends.

With the 3rd Annual Amber Rose SlutWalk starting next weekend (Sept. 30-Oct. 1) and boasting to be bigger and better than the previous years, BET Style caught up with Amber Rose to get the exclusive on why she found it important to create her SlutWalk, dealing with slut-shaming and how she was coined MUVA!

How does one get the title, Muva? According to Amber, it all began with her maternal instinct and lots of love for her friends and family. “I’m the person that makes sure that you are wearing your seatbelt or that you have taken the time out to eat. I was always the one to make sure that my friends didn’t drink too much or just be that voice of reasoning and love. They would be like, ‘OK, Muva,’ and it just stuck,” Amber explains to BET exclusively. “People don’t know this about me but I have never taken a drug in my life. NOTHING! So I was definitely a voice of reason.”

Amber believes that her maternal instincts are also what drives her to be so passionate about her cause and a feminist to the core. “I want equality for women and for us to be treated the same way that men are,” she says. “There shouldn’t be such a thing as a double standard. Guys always make the excuse that they do what they do because they are men and we can't because we have a vagina. It's just complete bullshit and I fight for that equality everyday.”

Her desire to rid the world of slut-shaming runs deep. “Now more than ever with the political climate, we have to use our voice and speak out to let people know that there are social injustices that affect me, you and my son. Women are treated unfairly in the workplace and have to work twice as hard to earn less than a man. I'm here to talk about these issues and this is why I have my Slutwalk and want to put an end to slut-shaming.”

So what is slut-shaming? Well, according to Muva, slut-shaming is giving a woman a derogatory label after she has done or it is assumed that she has done something sexual. “Not knowing her sexual history at all, not that it even matters, but basically calling her a slut or a whore based on the fact that you are uncomfortable with who they are is slut-shaming,” she tells us.

“If a woman makes a conscious decision to do what she wants in her sex life, you call her a slut to make her feel inferior — that is slut-shaming. I have been a victim of it and I have been one to victimize. No matter, it is wrong.” 

This year, the Slutwalk will be unique as it is the first time that she will have a conference (Sept. 30) that will educate women on everything from learning how to own their sexuality to securing their finances.

“The first year, 2,500 people showed up. I had no sponsors, it was really grassroots and there wasn't much money,” Amber informs us. “I really depended on donations from rich celebrities who really believed in me and supported the movement.”

For the second year, Amber took pride in sharing that she had more than 11,000 people in attendance and a list of new sponsors.

Recently, she began spreading the word in every way that she could, including letting her people get a peek of her bushy nether regions. And it went viral, even going as far as gaining the name "The Amber Rose Challenge"!

Just recently, she was was a guest on the Domenick Nati Show, where she stated that there was a serious plan behind that controversial image. “I like to be controversial, that is my thing. I promote certain things the way that I do because of who I am,” she claimed. “I don't want girls to look up to me and do the things that I do. I want them to be true to themselves. This is the idea that I had and and it worked for me, but I definitely suggest that you do what is best for you.”

Indeed, it was a genius move for the blonde beauty, as she was able to gain the support of sponsors like Pepsi, Budweiser and Beats by Dre, which helped facilitate the event.

Thanks to Reebok, who stepped up to the frontline and paid for the tickets so that the event is free for those who sign up using the Reebok code, the third annual Slutwalk is expected to host more than 20,000 supporters!

“With more sponsors, there is money for counseling and HIV/AIDS testing and so much more. It is a safe place for women and people of the LGBTQ+ community. I want people to know that they are not alone and that we all deal with the same things in life,” Amber shares.

Although, Amber works hard to erase the labels, she is still subjected to fake news about her sexuality and who she is rolling in the sheets with, but she has learned to deal with it in a way that keeps her focused and at peace. “It use to bother me because everyday it seemed like I was in a relationship with a different guy that the internet had me associated with,” she informs us. “It would be literally someone that I never met and a full story about how we were in a restaurant snuggled up in a corner. And I'm like, ‘I never even met this person in my f**king life!’ Then I would remember getting on Twitter to lash out and speak my truth and then I would cry. I was like this is not real life!”

Amber Rose wants people to be clear that her life is an open book. “People know who I date and don't date. If you don't see me in public holding hands with them, then I definitely haven't been with them. I decided I'm not going to be stressed out over what is not real. I just said, ‘F**k it!’"

She also wants people to know that she also stands for the respect of men when it comes to shaming. When she appeared on The Doctors in 2015, she stated, "I feel like every man cheats, that’s just me. But I do feel like if he loves you enough, you will never ever find out.”

Her thoughts have changed since then. “I don't want to say that is every man because that is unfair. I was going through a divorce at the time and I was really in my feelings. I think it was unfair to put every man in one box. My idea has changed. I don't want men to do that to us — it has to be fair across the board.”

Overall, Amber wants women to attend the Slutwalk. “It is really a beautiful day that can change a person’s life. Be open-minded and supportive to one another.”
