Robinson Cano Signs With Jay-Z's Roc Nation
New York Yankees player Robinson Cano is joining The Roc. Cano parted ways with agent Scott Boras to sign a deal with Jay-Z's Roc Nation, the company announced today.
Roc Nation will add sports representation to its roster by way of a partnership with Creative Artists Agency. The new division will be known as Roc Nation Sports.
"At this point in my career, I am ready to take a more active role in my endeavors on and off the field," the second baseman said in a statement. "I am confident that the pairing of Roc Nation Sports and CAA Sports will be essential in helping me accomplish my short- and long-term goals. I am making this important decision now so I can keep my focus on helping the Yankees succeed in 2013, while minimizing any distractions for me and my teammates."
Having expanded from a label imprint to a full-service management company, and with his Brooklyn Nets partial ownership, adding a sports department to Roc Nation was inevitable.
"Because of my love of sports, it was a natural progression to form a company where we can help top athletes in various sports the same way we have been helping artists in the music industry for years," Jay said in a statement.
Acquiring Cano might be a small step on a larger journey for Mr. Carter. Rumor has it that the New York native plans to earn his certification to become a sports agent starting first with baseball, and expanding to include football and basketball.
