BET Expands Original Programming
BET Networks CEO Debra L. Lee said it best: "It's a brand-new game for BET."
The network unveiled its new show lineup on Wednesday night at the 2011 Upfront presentation. Front and center at the star-studded event was the cast of BET's new scripted show, Reed Between the Lines, starring Tracee Ellis Ross (Girlfriends) and Malcolm-Jamal Warner (The Cosby Show), pictured above. The show follows Alex, an English professor, and Carla, a psychologist, as they navigate life’s ups and downs with wit and humor.
BET Programing President Loretha Jones also announced the return of two other original hit series, The Game and Let's Stay Together, rounding out the network’s scripted television lineup. BET also unveiled four upcoming scripted Web-only series, two of which fall into the thriller/sci-fi genre. The science fiction series Odessa is about a father and daughter with psychokinetic abilities, while BET.com's new thriller Asylum follows a team of doctors as they treat patients at the infamous St. Dympna Hospital for the Criminally Insane.
Two other new Web originals include 8 Days A Week, which follows seven teens in D.C. as they pursue their dreams, and Lenox Ave, the story of three twenty-something friends navigating their way through life, love and career in Harlem. According to Denmark West, President of BET Digital Media Group, each new webisode will run three to six minutes. The convergence of broadcast and digital media is more than just a notion—it is happening now. With these new digital original series, BET is continuing to raise the bar for the entire industry.
