45-year-old Kenyan Rodgers used to be an elementary school teacher in Fort Bend, Texas. Now the former band instructor has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for sexually abusing a student.

In July of 2013, Rodgers led a band camp that took place at Texas Southern University. During the camp, Rodgers was found engaging in sexual activity with a 13-year-old girl. The young girl was an attendee of the camp. After the police were notified, an investigation into Rodgers’s history was opened.

Officials then discovered that Rodgers had sexually abused the child since 2012. The sexual misconduct occurred while Rodgers was a teacher at Ridgegate Elementary School.

Prosecutors have applauded the young girl for standing up for herself and telling officials what happened.

Rodgers pleaded guilty to continuous sexual abuse of a young child. In addition to the 30-year sentence, Rodgers also received a 25-year sentence for aggravated sexual assault of a child involving the same child. The sentences will run concurrently.
