Man Arrested for Vandalizing a Truck and Blaming #BlackLivesMatter
A Texas man has been arrested after trying to kill two birds with one stone.
Scott Lattin was taken in Friday on charges of making a false police report, the Whitney Police Department reported in a press release. He's accused of tagging "Black Lives Matter" on his own truck in order to make an insurance claim for vandalism and blame the civil rights movement.
Lattin told Fox 4 he was the victim of vandalism earlier this month because his family supports police.
His family had displayed blue and white ribbons on their picket fence at home, as well as the saying, "Police Lives Matter" on the back of their truck, in honor of fallen Deputy Darren Goforth, who was gunned down in Houston last month.
He told reporters that someone had ripped out his glove box and slashed his seats, causing $5000 worth of damage, but his description of the damage is what raised a red flag in the minds of investigators. Police claimed they didn't see the slashed seats, etc. when Lattin initially filed a police report.
"We had initial video when the officers took the report, and then when we saw your story on Channel 4," Whitney Police Chief Chris Bentley told the station. "When we looked at those two videos, there were some differences in those and that led us to take the investigation into a different direction."
Calling the incident "very disturbing," Bentley asked supporters to stop sending the Lattin family money. Lattin had raised nearly $6000 in donations from a GoFundMe campaign which has since been taken down.
Lattin, unsurprisingly, calls the charges "absolutely not true" despite admitting to the lies in an affidavit.
