Louisiana Teen Dies After Breaking His Neck Playing Football
The students and faculty at Franklin Parish High School in Louisiana are in mourning this weekend, after a beloved student and football star died during a game on Friday.
Tyrell Cameron, a sophomore, was hit during a punt return in the fourth quarter Friday, a local ABC affiliate reports. The 16-year-old was rushed from his home field to a hospital, where he later died. Coaches at the school told the TV station that the teen broke his neck in the hit.
“If you only know Tyrell Cameron in death, and didn't know him in life, then you truly missed out on what is good in our country,” the Franklin Parish football team said in a Saturday statement. “The next time you come across someone of a different race, or background, or religion, take a moment to get to know them, because you may get lucky enough to meet someone like Tyrell.”
Greg Hill, who said he coached the teen, said Cameron was “as fine of a kid as there is” and a skilled athlete.
Our condolences go out to Cameron's family.
