College Bound Teen Loses Mom, Receives $28K From Generous Strangers
Dellarontay Readus's mother died a month before he was to attend Stanford University as an incoming freshman.
She was battling heart and stomach issues and died, making it difficult for the family to gather money to pay for her funeral. But generous donations have now covered the arrangements and Readus's college expenses.
The family originally asked for $2,000 to go toward the full cost of the $5,000 arrangements. But thanks to generous strangers who were touched by Readus story, they received more than $28,000 in donations through a GoFundMe fundraiser.
The death of his mother was heartbreaking for Readus, who was planning to spend some of the money he saved up for college on her funeral, he told WREG.
“Basically it all comes down to the fact that we’re poor, and we don’t have anything,” Readus said. “We didn’t have anything our whole lives, and we still don’t have anything right now.”
