Cyberstalker of Jackson State President Awaiting Indictment
A contentious Internet drama was recently diffused when a 20-year-old man was arrested on charges of cyberstalking Jackson State University president Carolyn Meyers. However, the alleged stalker is still waiting for formal felony charges to be filed by a grand jury.
Jhamerius Darshawn Mack, a 20-year-old resident of Raymond, Mississippi, and who is not a student at the university, was charged with making threats against Meyers on Facebook.
Mack is currently in jail at the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond awaiting trial. A spokeswoman for the county district attorney’s office told BET.com that the grand jury’s decision is expected within the next week.
The incident rocked the campus of the historically Black college in Mississippi, where Meyers is the first woman to serve as president.
“For most students here it was a shock,” said Kaylon McCou, a senior at Jackson State majoring in political science, in an interview with BET.com. “Most students say they have never heard of anything like this, especially targeting a university," who served as a student government justice.
In a statement, Jackson State’s Department of Public Safety said that Mack’s arrest stemmed “from tips received about threatening statements posted on social media sites.” They also said that the FBI, the Hinds County District Attorney’s office and the Mississippi Attorney General’s office assisted with the investigation.
Meyers has served as president of Jackson State since 2010, after serving as president of Norfolk State University. She served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs for North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, where she had been a tenured professor of mechanical engineering and dean of the College of Engineering.
