After a Shooting, Philadelphia’s Mayor Blows His Stack at City’s Parents

In the wake of a shooting that left three Philadelphia teens dead, Mayor Michael Nutter expressed his frustration with the shooter and the city’s parents.

In the wake of a shooting that left three Philadelphia teens dead, Mayor Michael Nutter has some strong words for the shooter, whom he calls a “dog."

Calling the situation “completely insane,” the mayor explained that seven teenagers somewhere between 14 and 16 years old on a Tuesday night, a school night, were in a car going to have a fight with another teenager.

Authorities report that 30-year-old Axel Barreto fired a dozen or more shots into the car loaded with the teens after the boys arrived for a confrontation with his stepsons.

Joshua Soto and Dante Lugo, both 14, and 16-year-old Javier Orlandi died as a result of the shooting.

To the parents of Philadelphia’s youth, the mayor says they need to “not to act like idiots and a–holes.”

In reference to the teens involved: “Their little butts should have either been in bed, getting ready for bed, or doing some homework,” Nutter said. “Not out in a car, not in some other neighborhood and not up to this kind of nonsense. I’m not your mom and I’m not your dad. We cannot completely legislate, or by policy, make people responsible for their children.”

Barreto was arrested on Wednesday night and charged with three counts of murder. Police say he is cooperating with the investigation.

In conclusion, Nutter pleaded with teens who know the victims to avoid any retaliatory acts. “It is not going to work out well for any of you,” the mayor said.
