Fly Young Red: I'm Not Ready for a Record Deal
Becoming an "Internet celebrity" means fending off rumors for Fly Young Red. The openly gay rapper went into detail about the online chatter that has continued around the false word that he signed with Lil Wayne's Young Money click.
The YMCMB story got "blown out of proportion" after a satirical website made up a story about Red signing with the imprint. In actuality, Red hasn't even met Lil Wayne, he tells BET.com.
"I don't know those people," Red says of YMCMB. "I don't know what they got going on, that's them. I don't want to force any gay agenda on anybody or make somebody feel some type of way about Cash Money/Young Money because they said I'm not signed with them, or they're not signing a gay artist. I don't really have anything to do with them."
Red became popular for the track "Throw That Boy Some P***y," which is nearing 900,000 hits online. Even with the newfound notoriety, the New Orleans native wants to build up his catalog first, before he jumps into a deal. "I let this Internet celebrity go to my head, but I have to realize I don't have a full body of work out. I don't have out an album," he points out. "I'm not getting played on the radio, so once people see that I'm marketable and there is a lane for this — 'cause that's what I wanted to do, create a lane — I'm sure that I'll be signed with a label, but as of right now, I'm not really looking for that."
