Beyoncé Chats About Album's Message and Lessons in Failure
Beyoncé has been dominating the scene since she started her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour and now with the unexpected release of her new album, we can't imagine that anything could knock the singer down. Everything she touches seems to turn into gold, but in an accompanying video explaining the message behind the project, Bey says that it's all about finding beauty in imperfection and recalls an important lesson learned from losing.
"I thought of this performance, which was a really defining moment in my life as a child. In my mind, we would perform on Star Search, we would win and we would get a record deal," she says about her appearance on the talent show with her first group, Girls Tyme, in the early 1990s. "It's no way in the world I would have ever imagined losing as a possibility. I was only 9 years old. At that time you don't realize that you can work super hard and give everything you have and lose. It was the best message for me."
Bey also adds that there's something to take away from moments of failure.
"I feel like something about the aggression of 'Bow Down' and the attitude of 'Flawless,' -- the reality is sometimes you lose. You're never too good to lose, you're never too big to lose, you're never too smart to lose. It happens. And it happens when it needs to happen and you need to embrace those things."
But despite her subsequent successes and failures, the 32-year-old emphasizes what she really values in her life: family, respect and creating change for the better.
"I have a lot of awards and I have a lot of these things and they're amazing. I worked my a-- off. I work harder than probably everybody I know to get those things. But nothing feels like my child saying, 'Mommy.' No, nothing feels like when I look at my husband in the eye. Nothing feels like when I'm respected when I get on the stage and I see that I'm changing people's lives. Those are the things that matter and at this point in my life that's what I'm striving for."
