Young Chop shook up the blogosphere when he dissed Kanye West for remixing his beat for Chief Keef's "I Don't Like" back in May. But Sonny Digital was only too happy to welcome Yeezy's golden touch on 2 Chainz' newest single, "Birthday Song." After crafting backdrops for hits including Future's "Same Damn Time" and YC's "Racks," the producer recently told BET.com that he hopes the Chi-Town superstar's co-production will help take the song—and his own reputation—to the top.
"I feel good about it," Sonny said of the song. "Hopefully it will shoot up the charts and do something beautiful. I feel like I have to keep showing that I can deliver. 'Racks' was cool, and 'Same Damn Time' is cool, but this one with Kanye West might take things through the roof. There are other producers with hits, but they haven’t worked with Kanye West. That’s like as high as you can go in the producer world."
The beatmaker's ecstatic reaction is a far cry from Young Chop, who said Kanye West butchered his sparse signature sound on the epic G.O.O.D. Music remix to "I Don't Like." On "Birthday Song," the first single from 2 Chainz' forthcoming major-label debut, you can hear Yeezy's touch in the creepy, evolving strings and trippy vocal samples (Kanye spits a rhyme alongside Chainz as well). "Kanye, you know how he does—he added some extra things to the beat," Sonny says. "I’m just grateful that it happened. It’s a good look for me; I’m not worried about no money or anything. Your name is more than the money—as long as you keep that hot, it’s always going to be a door open to make money."
And that door certainly seems wide open for Sonny Digital now, who says he has several more high-profile collaborations on the way. "Last night I was in the studio with B.o.B., and he picked a bunch of beats, so hopefully I’ll have something coming out with him," Sonny said. "DJ Khaled called me, I have something on [his new album, Kiss the Ring]. I’ve got some stuff with Ace Hood on the way. I’m not 100 percent sure what he’s going to do with it, but I heard something I did with Wiz Khalifa did over the phone. I’m working on a mixtape with Drumma Boy too."
But Sonny hasn't forgotten who got his name out there in the first place. Even after topping charts with Kanye and Chainz, he's looking forward to continuing his fruitful working relationship with Future. "We make some good-ass music together, and it’s so easy to do for us," Sonny says. "The chemistry between me and him as far as making music is crazy; we could probably make a hit every day if we wanted to. We complement each other: My beats feel him and he feels my beats."
Back to the future, indeed.
