Frank Ocean: "I Feel Like a Free Man"
Member of Odd Future and rising R&B star Frank Ocean revealed today that his first love was with a man at 19 years-old. Ocean, 24, said via his Tumblr page:
“4 summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too. We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Every day almost, and on the day we were together, time would glide. Most of the day I’d see him, and his smile. By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless.”
Although Ocean never used the words gay or bisexual, he does say, “I don’t have secrets I need kept anymore” and, “I feel like a free man.”
Odd Future has been widely criticized for their homophobic lyrics, especially from the group's front man Tyler the Creator. On Tyler's 2011 solo album, Goblin, he used an anti-gay slur 213 times. Nonetheless, Tyler the Creator was supportive via Twitter:
“My Big Brother Finally F****** Did That. Proud Of That N**** Cause I KNow That S*** Is Difficult Or Whatever,” he tweeted.
Congrats to Frank Ocean on his newfound freedom on Independence Day. As we say at BET, "We got you."
