MC Lyte Responds to Tyler the Creator Rhyme
On Odd Future's latest single, "Rella," Tyler the Creator fashions a new target out of pioneering female rapper MC Lyte. Responding to the slight in a new exclusive interview with HipHopDX, the iconic '90s rapper said she found Tyler's behavior "careless" and "irresponsible."
In the line from "Rella," Tyler makes a crude reference to Lyte's sexuality. "Let's get it poppin' like MC Lyte around some dykes," he rhymes.
"I definitely was insulted," Lyte says of her initial response to the lyric. "We do have a generation that is quite irresponsible when it comes to what it is that they’ll say [and] their behavior. [But still], it took me by surprise."
Lyte said that she made a decision to make her own career about uplifting her fans, and that she would have preferred not to have her name drug through the mud as one of Tyler's "shenanigans."
"With all that I’ve done throughout my years in inspiring generations of people, I think it very irresponsible of him.... Just ‘cause words rhyme or sound alike doesn’t mean I need to be your stomping ground."
