In an interview with Hip Hop DX, west coast veteran rapper DJ Quik revealed that he was initially targeted by the Los Angeles Police Department as a suspect in the murder of Notorious B.I.G. 

Quik said that his car's likeness to the one used in the killing peaked the police department's attention.

“Just because I was there at that [VIBE] party [with Biggie before the shooting], they tapped my phones, found out my accountant’s number and went and posted up and waited for me at my accountant’s office to pick me up for questions,” Quik shared with Hip Hop DX. “And it was only because I owned a ’95 [Chevy] Impala [SS] that was black-cherry colored like the one that was used supposedly in the shooting, which was probably black, mine was burgundy, but at night they look identical in color.” 

While speaking very candid on the matter, Quik failed to mention the rumor that he and Biggie had gotten into an altercation earlier in the evening. Davey D, noted Bay Area–based journalist, documented this fact in an article written March 10, 1997. 

“Witnesses claim that Notorious B.I.G. was earlier that evening engaged in a heated argument with DJ Quik,” wrote Davey D. “The rumors speculating that Quik had something to do with the shooting immediately circulated around the Bay Area.” 

Although this is the first time Quik has spoken openly about the allegations, he did reference them in a few lines of is 1998 song “You’z a Ganxta.” In the song he rapped, “Yeah like that night with Biggie out at Quincy Jones' spot/Like 400 other people yeah I heard some shots/Broke away with the crowd, nervous obviously/And the mothafuckas blamed it on me, what the hell?”

The revelation comes just weeks after the F.B.I. released tons of files revealing previously undisclosed information about the murders of rappers Notorious B.I.G. and 2Pac.
