In The Best Man Holiday, Nia Long's character Jordan is in a relationship with a white man and it turns out the actress was behind the interracial move. During a video chat for Madamenoire.com alongside her costars Taye Diggs and Sanaa Lathan, Long said that it's only natural to pursue something with a good match regardless of his or her race.
"[Jordan and Brian] meet because of the social worlds that they're in and it works; and when something works you don't judge it based on what package it comes in. You judge it on how it makes you feel and if it works for your life…" Long said.
"We're living in a modern world where it happens and it's OK and it's no disrespect to any Black man. I love Black men, but the reality is the sistahs are marrying white men and the brothas are marrying white women and that's the world that we live in and it's not to be judged, and if it works for you then embrace it," she added.
Director Malcolm D. Lee also expressed that interracial relationships are just a fact of life adding that "African-American women who are extremely successful can't always find Black male counterparts on that level so it's a little bit of a reflection of reality that Black women are starting to date outside their race — and why not?"
Long also opened up to Mom.me about her career, being a working mother of two and how having her second son put a break on being called in for roles.
"It wasn't like I called my agent and said, 'I'm having a baby and I'm not coming back for two years.' It was more like, 'I'm having a baby,' and they stopped calling me for awhile," the 43-year-old said.
"Once the baby was born, and I was ready, the conversations gradually started to happen and eventually you get a job."
