Wow: Mother of Black Girl in Controversial Gap Ad Reveals Something Very Interesting About This Picture
After a controversial advertisement for GapKids sent the internet into an uproar this week over the way a young Black girl was positioned among a group of white youngsters, the little girl's mother is speaking out.
Many on social media took issue with the way the Lucy Dinknesh Lubensky, 9, was made to stand as a "prop" for an older-looking white girl, whose arm rests on Lucy's head. But Lucy's mother, actress Brooke Smith (you might remember her from Grey's Anatomy and Silence of the Lambs), wants everyone to "calm down" about the issue. Apparently, Lucy is Smith's adopted daughter and the girl resting her arm on her head is her sister, Fanny.
Interesting. Does that change the way people should see the ad? Some say yes, others say no. Regardless, Gap has come forward with an apology for everyone the campaign offended:
“As a brand with a proud 46 year history of championing diversity and inclusivity, we appreciate the conversation that has taken place and are sorry to anyone we’ve offended,” Gap spokeswoman Debbie Felix said in a statement to Fortune. The offensive image will be removed, but the campaign will move forward, the company said.
