Scandal Casts Treme Actor as Kerry Washington's Mom

Khandi T. Alexander will make her debut on the hit show.

Mrs. Pope is coming to Washington. Treme actress Khandi Alexander has been cast as Kerry Washington's mother in Scandal, The Hollywood Reporter says. The actress will be a recurring character on the hit show's third season.
Alexander will play Maya Lewis, mother to Washington's beleaguered fixer, Olivia Pope. She'll first appear during Thursday's episode and be seen in flashbacks. The character is particularly interesting because she was meant to be killed in a plane crash orchestrated by President Fitzgerald (Tony Goldwyn) in a recent episode.
"You can only imagine what that would be like to find out that your mother did not die in the way that you thought she died, in terms of it being a willful act. It's surreal for Olivia," Goldwyn told THR
Scandal airs Thursdays on ABC with an exclusive encore showing on BET.
