Teen Rapper Shot and Killed in Maryland

This 18-year-old was well on his way to becoming a staple in the DMV area.

Thousands of fans, friends, colleagues and rappers alike woke up this morning to the devastating news confirming that Douglas “Swipey” Brooks was shot and killed during a house party taking place at his mother’s residence over the weekend.

As reported, police arrived to the scene in Maryland and identified that the up-and-coming rapper has been the latest victim to gun violence. He was reported dead at the scene around 1 o'clock in the morning on Sunday (August 21).

The rapper’s manager, Kevin Baldwin, shared with reporters that his client’s tragic death came after an argument with a girl that he used to have a relationship with. The shooter currently has not been identified, but authorities believe that the incident was not a random act of violence.

Brooks was well on his way toward becoming a staple rising artist in the DMV area, racking up hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube and signing to Baldwin’s Men of Principles label just last year. He also was lucky enough to share the stage with the likes of Fat Joe and Wale.

“The issue was he was being successful on every level but the hardest part was to get him away from his friends — the negativity,” Brooks’s manager said. “That’s where him and I bumped heads.”

The rapper was also described as “well-mannered” and “intelligent,” but didn’t have the “stable foundation” he needed in order to get pushing forward with his academics. He graduated high school with a 3.0 GPA and had earned a scholarship to Morgan State University.

Countless supporters took to social media to offer their condolences, including Wale.
