In an exclusive interview with BET News, legendary journalist Ed Gordon sat down with President Joe Biden in Las Vegas to discuss the pressing issues facing Black voters. With the NAACP Convention as the backdrop, the President addressed various topics, from political divisiveness to economic disparities, offering insights into his policies and the upcoming election.

The discussion inevitably turned to Donald Trump, particularly in light of the recent assassination attempt on the former President. Biden reaffirmed his stance against violence and political incitement, saying, “We got to tone down the rhetoric about violence. There's no room for violence.” However, he criticized Trump’s alignment with MAGA Republican politics, pointing to figures like J.D. Vance as evidence that choosing him as the VP pick signals a commitment to making "MAGA Republican politics the future of the Republican Party."

When asked about the economy, Biden highlighted his administration's achievements, including the lowest unemployment rate for Black Americans in history and significant investments in HBCUs. That said, he acknowledged the ongoing challenges posed by inflation and corporate greed. “Inflation is coming down,” he said, noting efforts to cap rent increases and promote affordable housing. Biden stressed the importance of economic equity, particularly through homeownership, which he sees as a key driver for building wealth in Black communities.

Biden-Harris 2024 Black Media Director Jasmine Harris said in an exclusive to BET: “From the very beginning of this campaign, President Biden has been clear that he would not take a single voter for granted. Unlike his opponent, his actions continue to match his words. From Detroit to Las Vegas the President has continuously met voters where they are – not only to communicate all of the historic progress that has been made by his administration, but to also hear directly from voters on the issues they care about most.”

Gordon pressed Biden on the perception that Democratic efforts have not resonated strongly enough. Biden attributed this to the time it took for policies to manifest tangible results. He mentioned infrastructure improvements and the need to recognize these projects better, stating, “We’re working on that. And I think it’s just taking time for people to see it.”

The conversation also delved into social issues, particularly the rollback of affirmative action and the teaching of Black history. Biden was determined to counter these efforts, highlighting his administration’s diversity and commitment to inclusion. He mentioned the establishment of Juneteenth as a federal holiday and his appointments of Black Americans to high-ranking positions, including Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. “American history is Black history,” Biden declared, emphasizing the importance of representation and recognition. “Black history is American history, and it's being built by it. That's why we're strong.”

Congressional Black Caucus Chairman, Rep. Steven Horsford (D-NV), echoed Biden's commitment, stating, "President Biden came to Vegas to hear from and talk to our community. My district is one of the most diverse in America and it was important to have him here sharing everything the Administration has done for Black Americans - from student debt relief to capping the cost of insulin and prescription drugs, to the fight to create more affordable housing - we must continue building on the progress we've made."

In a poignant moment, Biden reflected on his lifelong connection with the Black community, recounting personal anecdotes that underscored his longstanding commitment to civil rights. He shared a story from his youth, when he was arrested for protesting alongside a Black family, and how his mother's words guided his decision to serve as Vice President under Barack Obama. "That's how it's always been with me in the Black community," Biden remarked, illustrating his deep-rooted ties and dedication.

Biden also spoke about his widely criticized presidential debate, which sparked additional scrutiny of his age. “I think the only thing age brings a little bit of wisdom. And I think I've demonstrated that I know how to get things done for the country… there's more to do, and I'm reluctant to walk away from that.”

As the interview concluded, Gordon asked Biden to appeal directly to Black voters. Biden responded with a heartfelt message, underscoring his dedication to addressing their concerns and improving their lives. “Because you know where my heart is. You know where my head is,” he said, urging Black Americans to recognize the progress made and to continue supporting his vision for a more equitable and united nation.
