Body of Missing U.S. Service Member in Morocco, Has Been Found

Mariyah Collington was the second soldier who vanished off Morocco's coast earlier this month during a multinational training exercise.

The U.S. military has recovered the body of 19-year-old Army Specialist Mariyah Collington, the second soldier who vanished off Morocco's coast earlier this month during a multinational training exercise.

According to CBS, Collington, from Tavares, Florida, and 1st Lt. Kendrick Lamont Key Jr., 27, disappeared on May 2 near the Cap Draa Training Area while off-duty on a group hike to catch the sunset.

The tragic accident happened after one soldier, who reportedly couldn't swim, slipped into the rough waters. Collington jumped in to help but got caught by a massive wave. Others tried to pull them out, but were unsuccessful given the circumstances.

Key's body re-surfaced on May 9, and after days of grueling searches, Collington's remains were discovered Tuesday in a coastal cave about 500 meters away.

The incident happened while the soldiers were off-duty during a massive U.S.-Morocco exercise called African Lion.

“U.S. Africa Command confirms the recovery of our second Soldier, Spc. Mariyah Collington,” Africom and U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa said in a joint statement. "We mourn her loss and stand with her family and the 10th Army Air & Missile Defense Command community in this moment of grief."

Over 1,000 American and Moroccan troops, plus civilians, scoured 8,200 square miles with drones, choppers, boats, divers, and climbers. The Royal Moroccan Armed Forces helicoptered her body to a military hospital in Guelmim before the U.S. Air Force flew both soldiers home.

Collington served as an air and missile defense crew member with Charlie Battery, 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command. She shipped to active duty last year, full of energy that lit up her unit. "Her vibrant spirit created bonds," said her commander, per CBS.

"The loss of Spc. Collington is a profound loss for the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command," said Brig. Gen. Curtis King, commanding general of the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command. "Her recovery closes the search for our two missing Soldiers, but our commitment to caring for their Families, friends, and teammates continues. We are grateful to the U.S. and Moroccan forces for their professionalism and support throughout the search efforts."
