The Scoop: Rihanna, LL Cool J & Diddy

Posted July 18, 2008- Rihanna’s making good moves with Gucci. The Caribbean singer is posing as the celebrity face for the Italian fashion house’s “Tattoo Heart” campaign, a line of limited edition products designed to generate funds for the children’s charity UNICEF (25 percent of the proceeds will be donated). Though Rihanna has her own youth organization under her umbrella (The Believe Foundation), she’s previously teamed up with Gucci for UNICEF by performing at a fundraising benefit during New York Fashion Week this past February. Gucci’s creative director, Frida Gianni told Vogue that Rihanna was a shoe in to take the fundraising further. “When we decided to dedicate a full ad campaign, more than just creating products, to really come out and show our commitment to UNICEF, I felt a musician and a beautiful woman was the perfect icon for this campaign.”

In other fashion rocks news, season 5 of the Bravo channel’s “Project Runway” kicked off this week with the announcement that hip-hop luminary LL Cool J will be making an appearance as a guest judge. Word is he’ll be showcasing his own fashion line on the episode – good timing for the launch of his “LL Cool J for Sears” casualwear collection. Apparently LL and Sears are in partnership to revive the rapper’s fashion career (he has a not-much-talked-about men’s collection, Todd Smith, available at Macy’s) and the retailer’s bottom line (according to Women’s Wear Daily Sears’ sales have slipped more than 4% since last year). “I have always had a hand in fashion in some capacity, but I have never embraced a brand the way I will embrace this,” LL told WWD. “The LL Cool J name is a brand I have been building for 25 years and I didn’t want to do this line with just any store. I wanted to wait until I felt comfortable enough to take the leap.”

Meanwhile, the revival of “A Raisin in the Sun” that was executive produced and starred in by Sean “Diddy” Combs is up for three Emmy Awards this Fall. Diddy received pleasant reviews for his role in recreating the 1959 Lorraine Hansberry stage play (better than those he received when he performed the play on Broadway), and now the title is up for the “Best Made-For-TV Movie” honor when the 60th Annual Awards show airs Sep. 21. His co-stars Phylicia Rashad and Audra McDonald are up for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie, respectively.
