Cherelle Griner Posts Touching Birthday Salute to Wife Brittney Griner, One Year After Her Release From Russian Prison

The dynamic duo continues to be a vision of support for one another.

Cherelle Griner is showing her love to her spouse, Brittney Griner, on her special day.

On Oct. 18 Cherelle captioned her video, "Happy birthday my love! God did his big one with you. I couldn't ask for a better soul to do life with! Celebrating you is easy and to love you is an honor. Cheers to another year baby."

The gold medalist responded, "Awww baby I love you so much."

The couple celebrated the Phoenix Mercury player's special day together this year. However, Brittney's birthday last year was starkly different. She was incarcerated in Russia, convicted on drug charges by a Russian court, and sentenced to 9 years.

The basketball star endured 294 days in Russian custody after her arrest at Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport in February 2022, accused of possessing vape cartridges with cannabis oil in her luggage.

E! News reports that Cherelle worked closely with the White House during Brittney's 11 months in Russian captivity and tirelessly worked towards bringing her wife home. The athlete, who played for a Russian basketball team during the WNBA offseason, was released in a prisoner exchange. The swap involved the release of arms dealer Viktor Bout from a US prison, who was then returned to Russia.

Upon Brittney’s return, her partner shared her joy in a post on Instagram. She said, "Yesterday my heart was made whole thanks to the collective efforts of MANY!,"

The attorney continued, "I'm humbled by their hearts. To care for another, a stranger to some, a friend to some— is humanity in its purest form! As BG and I start our journey to heal our minds, bodies, and spirits— I wanted to personally say thank you to some of the hands; seen and unseen, that helped make it possible for me to see my wife again!"

Brittney showed her gratitude for those who rallied for her saying, "It feels so good to be home," in a Dec. 16 post where she finally reunited with Cherelle. "The last 10 months have been a battle at every turn. I dug deep to keep my faith and it was the love from so many of you that helped keep me going. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone for your help."
